Observe and Be

What do you do when you don’t do? I’ve heard that it’s not about doing. It’s about being.  And I thought I’d been doing that. Or rather, being that.

This past week, I understood it on a deeper level. It’s about observing.

That’s right. Observing. I got the message all over the place to observe. After five different people mentioned observing either to me directly or in a video that I happened to be watching, I knew the message was for me.

In the past, I’ve noticed what I noticed. This was different. This type of observing is at a deeper level.

This is how it goes: Close your eyes, breathe, and focus on your body. As the observer, you get to notice what is going on. There is no need to do anything. If a thought pops up, observe it.

“Oh, I’m noticing a thought.” If a pain gets your attention, observe it. “Oh, I notice a sense of discomfort in my stomach.” If a sound jumps into your awareness, observe it. “Oh, I’m observing me listening to music.” You get the idea.

There is nothing to do. You don’t have to change anything. Just observe.

So, what will happen? Amazingly, by observing what is happening, changes occur. As you watch, the sensations can move. Still, just observe. It’s like watching a kaleidoscope. As what you are observing morphs, you will notice that your body no longer needs to speak to you. It has your attention and knows that the message is being delivered. You are paying attention.

The end result is that you will have more awareness and calm. This means that your intuition will increase, and you will feel more at peace. This sounds like a win to me.

What I’m reading is that if you spend one to two hours a day doing this, then you will
experience major changes in your life. If you don’t have that kind of time to keep your eyes closed, observe what is around you and within you as you go about your day. As you sit at the stop light, take a moment to breathe slowly and observe what your feelings are in that moment.

Or try it for five minutes. Starting small is a great way to adjust to any new habit.

We all get it when we get it. This week was my week to observe. Give it a try and look for the wins as they come into your life.
